The US defence industrial base should find a way to wean itself off of rare earth minerals from China, according to new recommendations from a bipartisan congressional task force.

The task force, which released six recommendations on Thursday in its final report, was focused on tackling vulnerabilities and identifying threats in the nation's defence industrial base.

The group noted that a “significant amount” of materials are “sole-sourced from the People’s Republic of China,” and recommended a requirement “to identify supplies and materials for major end items that come from adversarial nations and implement a plan to reduce reliance on those nations.”

It also called for the Department of Defence to “deploy the full range of American innovation to secure the supply chains involving rare earth elements,” which are critical to everything from semiconductors to building precision-guided bombs.
