An obsessed off-duty NYPD officer who laid in wait for her former girlfriend before going on a deadly shooting spree was ordered held without bail on Monday pending an exam to determine if she understands the murder and assault charges against her.

Yvonne Wu, 31, of Staten Island, appeared in Brooklyn Criminal Court on charges brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James of murder for the Wednesday slaying of Jamie Liang, 24, and attempted murder of ex-girlfriend Jenny Li, 23.

Judge Joshua Glick granted a request from Wu’s lawyer for an examination to determine the officer’s capacity to understand the charges against her and to assist in her defence. Wu was remanded without bail until her next court date November 19.

The jealous Wu was waiting for Li in the home they both had shared in Bensonhurst when Li and Liang arrived home Wednesday evening. Wu opened fire, repeatedly shooting Liang in the chest, and firing one bullet at Li, also in the chest, authorities charged.

In a chilling 911 recording, the operator could hear someone in the background saying: “That’s what you get,” sources told the New York Daily News. Wu then went outside the house and waited for police to cuff her.

Wu was described by friends of her ex as obsessed after Li broke up with her, with accounts of stalking and at least one physical altercation in the month since their contentious split.

Friends of the murder victim Liang were raising funds online to help her parents raise money for funeral arrangements, with the appeal accompanied by a photo of the smiling victim riding in a boat with both arms raised.

“Jamie was a 24-year-old dental student at NYU who had a bright future ahead of her,” read the fundraising appeal. “She was loved by so many and filled every room with her kindness and lively spirit. We live to honour all the joy that she brought to the lives of her family and friends.”
