Who was the ‘jet pack man’ flying over LA? FBI floats a theory
- A police helicopter recorded images of what looked like a ‘Jack Skellington’ inflatable toy around the time pilots claim to have sighted a human flier last year
- The FBI confirms it has a working theory involving balloons, but some witnesses say the object changed direction rapidly rather than just floated

Has the FBI solved the mysterious case of the “jet pack man”?
Multiple sightings of what some said looked like a man flying in a jet pack in the skies of Los Angeles prompted a federal investigation.
This week authorities offered some details about the probe.
“The FBI has worked closely with the FAA to investigate reported jet pack sightings in the Los Angeles area, none of which have been verified,” read an FBI statement. “One working theory is that pilots might have seen balloons.”
KNBC-TV reported on Monday that a Los Angeles police helicopter recorded images of what appeared to be a human-shaped inflatable toy floating thousands of feet in the sky about two weeks after the second of three airline crew reports of a possible jet pack flier last year,
The police helicopter photos and video obtained by KNBC were recorded in early November 2020 as the human-size object floated above the Holmby Hills and Beverly Hills areas. The object strongly resembled the Jack Skellington character from the 1993 Tim Burton movie A Nightmare Before Christmas.
