Explainer | US midterm elections: how long will it take to know who won?
- Tuesday’s US midterm elections will determine control of Congress and with it, the fate of President Joe Biden’s agenda
- Experts say it might be days or weeks before the outcome of some close races – and control of Congress – is clear

Here is some advice for anyone following Tuesday’s US midterm elections: be ready for a long night and maybe days of waiting before it’s clear whether Republicans or President Joe Biden’s Democrats will control Congress.
All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives are up for grabs, as are 35 US Senate seats and 36 governorships.
Republicans would need to pick up five seats to take a majority in the House and just one to control the Senate.
Non-partisan election forecasters and opinion polls suggest Republicans have a very strong chance of winning a House majority, a result that could become clear Tuesday evening, with control of the Senate likely to be closer fought and likely to take longer to be resolved.
A massive wave of Republican support could lead to declarations of victory hours after polls close.
