US President Joe Biden released a video on Tuesday morning announcing that he will run for re-election in 2024, calling the fight for democracy a key motivation for his bid to hold onto the White House for a second term.

“Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours. That’s why I’m running for re-election as President of the United States. Join us. Let’s finish the job,” Biden wrote in a Twitter post accompanying the video.

The three-minute video, opening with footage from the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump, calls out “MAGA extremists” – a moniker associated with Trump – for targeting women’s reproductive freedom, LGBTQ rights and voting rights.

The announcement video closes with the Biden-Harris campaign logo, signalling that Vice-President Kamala Harris will remain Biden’s running mate. Harris also posted the video on her Twitter account.
