Hong Kong Canto-pop star and actress Gillian Chung Yan-tung is in hospital in mainland China after injuring her head at around 2am on Monday at a hotel in Xiamen, in the southeastern province of Fujian, according to online media outlet NetEase Entertainment.

Later on Monday, Fok provided some details of Chung’s accident on social media platform Weibo, saying the entertainer had felt dizzy after going to the bathroom and had fallen, hitting her head against a marble counter.

Fok said Chung had called a colleague who helped her get to hospital, where she had a brain scan and other medical checks. Chung’s injury, on her right forehead near the eyebrow, was 6cm long and had needed 10 stitches.

After some discussion, Fok had helped to get Chung transferred to a specialist hospital which had also carried out checks.

Chung, 39, made her debut in May 2001 with Charlene Choi Tsoek-jin as part of Canto-pop duo Twins. The pair enjoyed immense popularity, releasing a dozen albums and playing concerts in North America, Australia, China and Malaysia.

The duo split temporarily in 2008 following a sex photo scandal involving Chung, but returned to the stage after a two-year break. Their most recent tour, Twins LOL Live Around the World, finished in Macau in October 2018.

Chung and Choi have co-starred in dozens of Hong Kong films, including The Twins Effect (2003), The Death Curse (2003) and Twins Mission (2007). Chung’s last screen outing was in the 2019 film Missing , in which she played a social worker whose policeman father vanishes while on a hike.

Chung caused a stir in May when she made public that she and her Taiwanese doctor husband Michael Lai had separated after less than two years of marriage.
