The smartphone, a platform that combines cellular phone and mobile computing functions in one device, is going third generation, with the P990i. It is the new flagship smartphone from Sony Ericsson, following successful predecessors the P800, P900 and P910. As a 3G handset, the P990i supports video calling, high-bandwidth multimedia downloads and internet access. It also supports Wi-fi connections for full e-mail access with attachments, anywhere and at anytime. It comes with a two-megapixel camera, multiple text input methods, 2.8-inch touch screen, 80-megabyte memory, anti-virus scanning and virtual private network program. The P990i, slated for release next quarter, will be the first commercially available smartphone to run version 9.1 of the Symbian operating system and UIQ 3 open-source software from Sweden's UIQ Technology.
