Cuisine: Japanese cuisine with an emphasis on sushi and sashimi.

Ambience: A spacious Japanese-style restaurant with high ceilings, light wood panelling and long rectangular paper lanterns. It's designed in an L-shape,  with a long sushi bar  that curves around to tables and private rooms.

Price: About $300 per person with service charge and tea.

Pros: A wide range of sushi and sashimi.  The place has a cosy feeling with semi-private tables  that are separated by  partitions and bamboo decorations. We were served a complimentary starter of chilled escargot with turnip. There's a range of Japanese beers (from $30), sake (from $60) and wine sodas ($30) such as Kyoho  grape ice wine, which tastes like cream soda.

Cons: We were disappointed by two items from the yakitori menu. The grilled cubed beef fillet ($60) was so chewy it was like chomping on bubble gum. The grilled gingko nuts on a stick were bitter and tough.

Recommended dishes: We started the meal on a good note with Japanese pen shell sashimi ($120), sliced paper thin and presented in a fan shape. The light flavour of the fish was enhanced by  fresh lime juice and shredded seaweed. Next we tried the yellow tail sushi (two pieces, $50), which was a thick chunk of creamy fish atop perfectly cooked rice.  A highlight of the meal was the soft shell crab roll (cut into eight pieces, $100, left). It was a delicious combination of crab wrapped in rice, then topped with slices of avocado and fish eggs. Another standout was the assorted tempura ($120, right) of straight-from-the-fryer shrimp, eggplant, shiitake mushroom and sweet potato. The beef udon ($80) also lived up to our expectations, as the noodles were soft and chewy,  and the clear broth was superb. The only dessert available was green tea, black sesame and red bean ice cream ($25), which didn't disappoint.

What else? On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays fresh fish and seafood  is flown in from Japan, so ask  what specials they have on those days. There are three private rooms with sunken tables available for small to medium-sized groups.
