Amnesty International seeks inspirational leader

An inspirational leader who passionately believes all people deserve basic human rights is needed at a Nobel Peace Prize winning organisation.

Amnesty International is looking for a visionary director to oversee the operations of the Hong Kong section.

Amnesty International, one of the world's largest NGOs, has more than 100 million members who share the goal of attaining universal human rights. They carry out vigorous impartial research and base all their campaigns on this research.

Knowledgeable candidates from any industry with the same vision and dedication are encouraged to apply for this role. Applicants are expected to have the transferable skills and experience to manage an international NGO.

'Basically, we welcome anyone from any background who meets our requirements and has adequate human rights knowledge to comment on the issues,' said chairwoman Si-si Liu Pui-shan.

The successful applicant will be working in three areas. First, the incumbent will guide the campaigns. A profound understanding of, and commitment to, human rights issues and strategy are essential. One thrust involves lobbying the government to change legislation to better protect victims of domestic violence.

Secondly, the new section chief will take on a supervisory role in matters related to fund-raising activities and financial oversight. A leader with strong balance-sheet savvy is required to assist the team.

'While there are professional staff to take care of the details, the director must be able to co-ordinate the macro issues,' Ms Liu said.

The third area of concentration is administration.

The ideal candidate should be a vivacious and diplomatic spokesperson who can converse with the media, deal with the government and build up a network with other non-profit organisations.

The successful candidate will be heading the local organisation and be responsible for its smooth operation.

'Staff and volunteers all have a vision that global human rights will be realised. We are determined to work towards this goal.

'If you identify with this goal, picking up this meaningful job is an opportunity to make a better world for ourselves.'
