free to be me

Parents are people too. Recognising this can make your relationship with them more open, loving and respectful

As a teenager, you should be aware that your parents are trying to work out how to relate to you.

This is true for teenagers too - learning how to relate to parents is also difficult.

Many teens are afraid of letting their parents down so they avoid talking to them.

P A R E N T S

P = People

Your parents are humans. They were once teenagers and had relationship problems, stresses about studies, worries about going to university and arguments with their parents.

They still feel happy and sad.

They have deadlines at work, and they have to make sure there is enough money for food, holidays, clothes and allowances.

They too have arguments with friends and many of our parents still have parents themselves to get along with.

A = Attitude

Sometimes we need an 'attitude check' when we are talking about our parents. Remember that you are not too cool to hang out with them.

The right attitude is to show that you love them by using the words 'I love you' or 'thanks for working hard to provide the best life for me'.

Write down everything your parents have done for you since you were born.

It will give you an idea of why they are worried when you stay out till midnight on a Saturday night and they haven't heard from you.

R = Respect

The verb 'respect' means to treat with consideration or high regard. All people want and need respect.

There is so much you can respect about your parents, including the effort they put in at work to bring home a pay check for your food, clothes and education.

Write a list of the qualities you respect about your parents.

This week, tell your parents that you respect them for those qualities.

E = Enjoy spending time with your parents

The best way to build relationships with people is to spend plenty of quality time with them. It is the same with creating a bond with your parents. Have fun with them - it's good to be close to your parents. Include them in your life.

N = Never lie

Parents know when you are lying. You might think you have got away with something, but your parents will find out. By telling them the truth, it opens up your relationship and shows your parents that they can trust you.

T = Teachers

'When I was a kid ...'

You have probably heard this from your parents. Don't underestimate their stories - parents can be the best teachers. Allow yourself to learn from them.

S = Support

Parents need support just like you and me. Ask them what you can do to support them.

Remember that they are a great support system to you if you need it.

Fieldwork

Allow your parents to enter your world.
