Editorial | Opportunities must be taken on road to China’s national development
On a day of celebration, Hong Kong is reminded of its unique role under ‘one country, two systems’ and how it can help drive the country forward

More than ever, National Day has been marked with pride and fanfare in Hong Kong and across the country.
It also comes with much soul-searching amid a mixed sense of optimism and anxiety under a new stage in the development of “one country, two systems”, the city’s unique governing principle.
It is incumbent upon the authorities and the community to seize the opportunities and help the city and nation scale new heights.
Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China at a reception yesterday, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said Hong Kong remained a participant, contributor and beneficiary of the country’s development.
Describing it as a critical period of economic transformation, Lee laid out three key directions: improving people’s livelihoods, prioritising the safeguarding of national sovereignty and contributing to national development.
His speech underlines the importance of defending national security, while capitalising on the advantages of one country, two systems in a way that brings mutual benefits to the city and the nation.
Quoting an ancient Chinese poem – “boundless is the ocean where we sail with the wind” – Lee’s remarks stress that Hong Kong should go where there are opportunities and seek whatever is out there to make progress.
