Editorial | Hong Kong’s performing arts role made for world city
Latest pair of mega-events sure to further consolidate Hong Kong’s status as cosmopolitan cultural hub

Hong Kong is small. But it is getting bigger in the world of performing arts, thanks to an ambitious drive to maximise the potential of an expanding but often underappreciated sector.
Riding on the momentum of two mega-events aimed at lifting its artistic profile, the city can further consolidate its status as a regional and global East-meets-West cultural hub.
The Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival, which begins on Saturday, and the inaugural Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo (HKPAX) that ended on Friday are the latest highlights in the mega-events calendar.
The former promotes integration, exchanges and collaboration, and boosts the soft power of the bay area.
The latter brings together stakeholders from the mainland and elsewhere to network, pitch, present work and explore international touring opportunities. They enrich our credentials as an events capital and a showcase of arts and culture.
HKPAX is more than a market for performing arts. With grand-scale productions and solo shows in musical theatre, dance, comedy, and orchestral music and Chinese opera, there is something for all art lovers.
