New Year’s Eve was celebrated in Hong Kong in a variety of ways. But for fans of Mandopop superstar Zhou Shen, the best place to see in 2026 was his landmark concert at Kai Tak Stadium. Zhou is the first mainland singer to perform in a solo concert at the flagship venue, which opened last March and hosted more than 40 events last year.

The star’s two concerts on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day contributed to the surge in mainland visitors to Hong Kong, with thousands coming to see him perform. But there are also many “Shengmi” in Hong Kong, and their strong showing helped showcase the deep cultural relationship between the city and the mainland.

Zhou, famous for his vocal range, stage presence and spectacular sets, is a phenomenon. His presence drew 120,000 people to the Kai Tak complex on New Year’s Eve, with fans enjoying the atmosphere even if they did not have tickets. The excitement gave local businesses a boost and restaurants and food courts were packed.

Zhou spoke of his love of Cantopop songs, even though he does not speak the dialect. Like many mainlanders, he grew up watching Hong Kong films and television dramas.

Five Cantopop songs were included in his act in Hong Kong, including “Under the Lion Rock”. He said he almost shed tears when rehearsing them, such is their power. The star was surprised to receive support from so many Hong Kong icons.

Despite his success, Zhou showed humility, saying he was honoured to perform in Hong Kong and embarrassed when he first saw his image prominently displayed.
