My Take | How the US Congress aids and abets acts of genocide

  • The fateful relationship between America and Israel is not only a threat to stability in the Middle East, but also the rest of the world

When it comes to America’s unconditional support for Israel, there is little difference between Democrats and Republicans, between the executive and legislative branches, and between state and federal governments, and between those in opposition and those in power. It’s quite extraordinary to see such unity among the US political elites who might otherwise be bitterly divided on everything else.

Still, the White House has been more concerned about appearances and public relations, while the US Congress is falling over itself to prove its undying loyalty to Israel. Practically the entire world – minus a few diehard and equally complicit Western allies such as the United Kingdom and Germany – is demanding an end to the acts of genocide in Gaza and murderous repression in the West Bank.

However, the US House of Representatives last week passed a bill that would rebuke President Joe Biden for delaying an arms shipment to Israel and compel his administration to deliver those weapons as soon as possible.

Weapons, after all, are needed to bomb Rafah, the last refuge of a million Palestinians.

Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the Biden administration had turned their backs on Israel by even hinting that there were limits to the US support. Seriously.

“This administration has sowed the seeds of doubt on this nation’s commitment to its allies,” he said. “Red lines are meant for our enemies. Red lines are not meant for our allies and our friends.”
