- The captain of the English Debate Team shares what he’s learned from joining this activity

Alistair Wright (Secondary Form Five), captain of the English Debate Team
It feels like just yesterday when I nervously joined the debate team, not knowing anything about it. However, it has turned out to be something that I love.
On the debate team, I have learned how to express my ideas and listen to others.
Every debate is a challenge that pushes me to think on my feet and communicate well. I go to any round of competition with butterflies in my stomach, but there is an adrenaline kick that helps me and my teammates put our best foot forward. Of course, we are gutted if we lose, but the taste of victory is so sweet.
I am fortunate to be coached by two incredible individuals, our English teacher Ms Roberts and Eric Chan, an ex-debater from our school. They have dedicated their time and expertise to help us become better debaters.

We thrive under pressure and work tirelessly to meet our goals. Training sessions at school and late-night Zoom meetings are where we come together as a team.
We spend hours researching, analysing information and crafting arguments. We pour our hearts into preparation, knowing that every bit of effort contributes to our success on the stage.
Not only have I learned research and analytical skills, but I have also learned to work with others and take responsibility. These skills are useful for my future.
As I continue forward as the team captain, I am excited to improve my skills, lead my team, and make a positive impact with my words and ideas.
Our school is determined to bring all three of our teams to the grand finals this year again as we did last year and hopefully, emerge victorious. Even if we do not, at least we know that we gave it our all and learned so much along the way.
