On Hainan Island, a high-end resort themed as the "lost" island of Greek mythology is taking shape. Atlantis Sanya is a US$1.6 billion destination resort being developed by Fosun International, the largest non-state-owned enterprise in China, and Kerzner International Holdings, a leading international developer and operator of destination resorts, casinos and ultraluxury resorts.

Slated for completion in 2017, the 62-hectare resort joins sister resort Atlantis, The Palm Dubai, and is indicative of the large-scale investment under way to cater to upscale tourism on the island.

Kerzner is also developing One&Only Sanya on Haitang Bay in Hainan, the first resort in China for the ultraluxury One&Only brand. Mark DeCocinis, president and chief operating officer of One&Only Resorts, expects the property will redefine the ultraluxury experience in the region. Being developed in tandem with China Gezhouba Group Real Estate, the property is slated to open in 2017. Gezhouba is also developing and selling high-end real estate next to the resort.

Also under construction is Rosewood Sanya, the third of the luxury resort brand's properties in China, following openings in Beijing and Chongqing. It is being developed by Poly Real Estate Group, a large state-owned real estate enterprise, and will be managed by international company Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. The property is being designed as an exclusive sanctuary within the integrated resort surrounding the International Finance Forum, Sanya's largest convention centre, opening this year.

In addition to 229 hotel guest rooms, Rosewood Sanya will also offer 61 residential villas set amid the 16-hectare resort's landscaped gardens. Wang Jian, vice-president of Poly Real Estate Company, says he is confident that the Rosewood brand will appeal to discerning leisure travellers "and those whose business brings them to this increasingly sophisticated resort destination".
