[SCMP Archive] Students re-enact U.N debate
The Hong Kong International School, Repulse Bay, was the scene of a model United Nations General Assembly with pupils taking part in a typical debate yesterday.
[First published on Apr 26, 1968] This was the first project of its kind in HongKong and was launched by the school to observe Human Rights’ Week.
Mr E. Martin, the U.S. Consul-General, made the opening address to the model assembly in the school auditorium, decorated with flags and containing equipment to resemble the UN General Assembly in New York.
About 130 pupils took part in the discussions, serving as “delegates” representing 95 countries.
The pupils were from the 9th grade (Form 3) to the 12th grade (Form 6) of the International School. Several pupils from St Stephen’s College also took part.
Human rights
The pupils debated subjects on the agenda which included China, Human Rights arid the Middle East.
The session will continue today with further debates on the Middle East and nuclear weapons.
The “delegates” will today attend an “international lunch” and later take part in a programme of entertainment.
