Taking art appreciation to a new level

With the popularisation of Web 3.0 and digital art, the days of hanging an original oil painting up in your living room are ending. And while you may think digital art doesn’t have the same feel as physical artwork, you might change your mind when you see how technology has taken art appreciation to new frontiers.

Those who visited Fine Art Asia and the Digital Art Fair Xperience in Hong Kong over the past two months would have seen how LG’s latest innovations took its leading OLED self-lit technology to a new artistic level. As the official screen partner of the largest digital art event in Asia, LG’s OLED screens were used to present all 400 digital artworks with NFTs by over 70 artists in an engaging and interactive high-tech Web 3.0 art experience.

Viewers could see every brushstroke, nuance, dimension, and layer of the digital art reproduced with excellent picture quality and strong colour contrast, enhancing their viewing pleasure and immersive experience.

A digital canvas that brings art to vivid life

There are many nuances and layers of black, but none beats LG OLEDevo’s Perfect Black, with its infinite levels of black, when viewing digital art. Hong Kong digital artist and photographer Gerry Li’s Rebirth 4.1 n black and white, portraying a man meditating in a forest, is a stunning contrast of light and darkness, drawing viewers into the ultra-realistic black levels of darkness and feeling the energy flow from the bright light.

Another good example is Martina Menegon’s video installation UNTOUCHED 257842, 2022. The Austrian artist creates a self-portrait through 3D scanning and glitching to generate new simulated fluid identities and avatars of herself presented on an absolutely black background. In this case, the perfect black helps the colours pop, showing great textures and three-dimensionality that hypnotise viewers.

Aside from the deepest black, the most accurate and vibrant colour reproduction is needed to capture the essence of an artist’s vision. Marjan Moghaddam’s GLITCHING JUNO MONETA  NFT series, with its 3D CG figurative animation, contemporary digital plasticity and glitching, requires a screen with strong contrast and a sense of reality to do it justice. In this video installation, the four background colours of red, blue, black and pink were reproduced with breathtaking colour saturation, while the multi-directional glitching pulsates to brilliant optical effect.

Gold is in a class of its own. The vivid yellow metallic colour glitters in shiny shades of gold in Takahiro Koga’s NEO MANEKINEKO -CRYPTO-, 2022, from the bitcoin to the spikes on the beloved “crypto” cat and the shimmering numbered-chain background. The sumptuous richness of the OLED gold is enough to entice viewers to reach out for their crypto wallet.

The pièce de resistance of digital art that requires the best-in-class colour with true-to-life accuracies, excellent clarity, detail and contrast is renowned artist Yang Yongliang’s spectacular immersive video installation Glows in the Arctic, 2022. The digital landscape of a mountainous city with massive reconstructed and recomposed urban images scintillates in every colour spectrum, complete with glowing stars and dancing Northern Lights. The OLED screen, with its ultra-high-definition display with 4K resolution, enthralls viewers and invites them to take a closer look at famous landmarks and cars travelling across bridges and down streets.
