Whisky aficionados should make every dram a sensory experience with the newly released limited-edition Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal.

Blue Label sets the standards

The third and final iteration in the ultra-premium Blue Label series of very special whiskies crafted from exceptionally rare casks and long-closed “ghost” distilleries celebrates the legendary Highland distillery Glenury Royal that has been silent since 1985.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal is the third and final iteration of the “Ghost and Rare” series.

This follows the releases of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Brora in 2017, and Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Ellen in 2018.  Whisky from these three cult-status “lost” distilleries has long been blended in various measures into every single bottle of regular Blue Label.  Intricately crafted from some of the rarest stocks of hand-selected casks across Scotland in the Johnnie Walker reserves - only one in 10,000 casks is considered to be of sufficient character for selection, the award-winning Blue Label is a velvety smooth and vibrant Scotch whisky.

A unique spirit

For the latest expression, Johnnie Walker Master Blender Jim Beveridge focused on the few remaining Glenury Royal casks.  The distillery was established in 1825 by Captain Robert Barclay, one of Scotch whisky’s most colourful characters – a Member of the British Parliament and the first man to walk one thousand miles in one thousand hours. Shortly after its opening, the distillery was destroyed by a fire, only to rise like a phoenix to thrive once again. Under the leadership of the indomitable Barclay, it flourished to become one of only three Scottish distilleries to enjoy a royal title. Today the rare spirit of Captain Barclay lives on in the dwindling stocks of this incredible “ghost” whisky.

“We have waited patiently for that moment when we turn our thoughts to this exceptionally rare whisky, carefully watching over our maturing casks until the time was right to explore its uniquely indulgent character,” said Beveridge.  “This indulgent new limited edition provides us with a wonderful opportunity to explore the remarkable layers of rich fruit found in every drop of Johnnie Walker Blue Label.”

As a result, this whisky has distinctively rich and fruity Glenury Royal single malt at its heart, along with Lowland single grain whisky from the closed distillery of Cambus, and Speyside “ghost” single malt Pittyvaich.  These two exceptionally rare whiskies perfectly balance their creamy toffee and butterscotch notes with the sumptuous orchard fruits, sweet apple and delicate apricot character of Glenury Royal. Five other exceptional spirits from the existing distilleries of Glen Elgin, Inchgower, Glenlossie, Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie bring waves of vanilla, heather honey and dried fruits that weave through smooth dark chocolate and nutty layers to create an exploration of this irreplaceable “ghost” whisky.

The perfect serve

The best way to savour this smooth, rich and rare blend bottled at an ABV of 43.8% is to serve it neat in a tumbler with a glass of chilled water on the side.  Take a sip of water first to cleanse the palate, leaving a small amount of water to combine with the whisky which allows you to fully appreciate the symphony of flavours within and enjoy a multi-layered sensory experience.

With only 540 bottles of the limited edition and individually numbered Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal (recommended retail price of HK$2,988) available in Hong Kong, there is no time like now to add this indulgent Scotch whisky to your collection.
