Those emerging industries in Zhengzhou, like high-end manufacturing, the internet, new energy, information technology, contributed to 24 per cent of the city’s GDP growth in 2015.

The city also saw great achievements in exports and imports last year, with 22.9 per cent growth year-on-year to reach over 57 billion US dollars, much better than most other cities in China.

Even China’s major economic engines, the Pearl River Delta and Yangzte River Delta, are struggling toughly and experiencing big slide in exports and imports.

Here we would introduce you four top projects to show Zhengzhou’s fabulous economic achievements in the past decade.

Zhengzhou-Europe International Shuttle Train

As mainland China transitions into a second period of economic opening up and reform, Zhengzhou is becoming the new engine for China’s rise and crucial point of the country’s "One Belt and One Road" national strategy, referring to the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.

According to the central authorities’ "One Belt and One Road" strategy, China would move faster to strengthen infrastructure connectivity with its neighbours, simplify customs clearance procedures, and build international logistics gateways.

At the core of these initiatives are the interwoven concepts of the "Look West" policy - the desire to develop China's traditionally underdeveloped western regions by moving manufacturing inland, and an emphasis on developing economic relations with central and South Asian nations - and a recognition of the importance of logistics and connectivity, the end goal being European markets via overland routes.

With increasing interest from other mainland provinces and neighbouring Asian nations, such as South Korea and Japan, the future for the Zhengzhou-Europe International Shuttle Train is bright, and only set to get brighter as the nation's development of the Silk Road Economic Belt grows.

The 10,214km Zhengzhou-Europe International Shuttle Train is a key overland route that will be an integral part of the "Belt and Road" initiatives as the city now is a major hub for the country's "Look West" policy.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the cargo and mail throughput of Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (ZGO) reached 403,000 tonnes last year, ranking eighth among the country’s major cities. The airport also has broke a new record, serving more than 17 million passengers, over 9 per cent up than 2014.
The Zhengzhou Airport Comprehensive Economic Experimental Zone (ZACEEZ) has a cluster of nearly 70 handset supply chain makers currently and is set to replace Shenzhen, the country’s innovation hub to become the largest handset production base in the world. Foxconn employs up to 300,000 people and runs up to 119 assembly lines in the zone and single-handedly contributed over 85.9 per cent of Henan province’s export value of U$ 26.83 billion in 2015.

The journey of the train starts Zhengzhou and leaves the nation at the Alataw Pass in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region before traversing central and eastern Europe to reach Hamburg, Germany.

The train offers a 15-day delivery time - around half the time of traditional shipping by sea - and is also considered safer, with weather conditions presenting less of a risk.

According to the Zhengzhou International Inland Port, as of December 31 last year, the westward rails had transported more than 107,900 tonnes of cargo worth about 1.2 billion U.S dollars since it took into effect in 2013.

DHL Global Forwarding is further expanding its pioneering multimodal services in China with a new twice-weekly service between Zhengzhou and Hamburg via Poland.

The new 17-day service will offer customers the flexibility of DHL Railconnect, the less-than-container load (LCL) service, as well as a full- container option, DHL Railline.

DHL now offers three regular multimodal rail services between China and Europe from Zhengzhou, Suzhou and Chengdu which span across central, eastern and western China. The three strategic Chinese cities rank within China's top 10 provinces in GDP in 2014, amounting to 12.9 billion yuan.

Zhengzhou, a hub for finance, commerce and resource distribution in central China, is fast becoming one of the largest economic centers in China with its increasing international and domestic investment, the international logistics giant said at its official website.

Zhengzhou Airport Comprehensive Economic Experimental Zone (ZACEEZ) - world's largest industrial base of intelligent terminals

Approved by the State Council as a national strategy in 2013, the government-developed Zhengzhou Airport Comprehensive Economic Experimental Zone (ZACEEZ) is key part of the provincial and municipal government's efforts to integrate ground and air transportation in the city. The zone maintained a robust growth momentum last year, generating more than 52 billion yuan (US$ 66.62 billion) in revenue last year, a year- on-year increase of over 22 per cent. Revenue from electronic information industry accounted for more than 97 per cent.

It has a cluster of nearly 70 handset supply chain makers currently and is set to replace Shenzhen, the country’s innovation hub to become the largest handset production base in the world, according to mainland media.

China-based Mobile vendors including Coolpad, ZTE, K-Touch, Skyworth and Kliton have also set up operations at the zone. Last year, a total of 200 million smartphones - from over 100 domestic and overseas handset device producers - were produced at Zhengzhou Airport Comprehensive Economic Experimental Zone, and then sold across the world, occupying around one seventh of the world's total shipments.

Foxconn, the global Electronics manufacturing giant started constructing factories at the zone in 2010 and began production in March 2011. Foxconn employs up to 300,000 people and runs up to 119 assembly lines in the zone and single-handedly contributed over 85.9 per cent of Henan province’s export value of U$ 26.83 billion in 2015.

The ongoing boom from the new wave of “smart-phone mania” helps Zhengzhou airport now become the fastest growing cargo airport in China.

Last year, Zhengzhou was a shining star to contribute the country’s economic growth, seeing its gross domestic product reached more than 730 billion yuan last year, an expansion of 10.1 per cent, 3.2 per cent above the national average for 2015.

Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (ZGO)

Last year, the State Council formally identified Zhengzhou as a center for international trade by air, putting investment and policy support behind its development. Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (ZGO) has broke a new record, serving more than 17 million passengers, over 9 per cent up than 2014.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the cargo and mail throughput of Zhengzhou airport reached 403,000 tonnes last year, ranking eighth among the country’s major cities.

According to the China Aviation Daily Zhengzhou airport has constantly adhered to the development strategy of "cargo first, international first and do first". The airport has signed cargo cooperation agreements with 17 cargo carriers and agency enterprises such as Shanghai Eastern Logistics Co., AirBridge Cargo Airlines, Cargolux Airlines, Silk Air and Nippon Cargo Airlines.

Diversified cargo routes lift Zhengzhou airport's hub status, expanding its route range to Chicago, Milan, Novosibirsk, Hahn (German), Kaunas (Lithuania) and Japan's Tokyo.

Currently 32 airlines has launched passenger routes from/ to Zhengzhou airport, linking the Central China's hub city with 81 destinations home and abroad. What's more, 18 cargo carriers operate services at CGO, transporting cargo & mail to 36 cities via 34 cargo routes, including 30 international and regional routes, the report said.

The 10,214km Zhengzhou-Europe International Shuttle Train is a key overland route that will be an integral part of the "Belt and Road" initiatives as the city now is a major hub for the country's "Look West" policy. The journey of the train starts Zhengzhou and leaves the nation at the Alataw Pass in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region before traversing central and eastern Europe to reach Hamburg, Germany.

Zhengdong New District

After the development of a dozen years, Zhengzhou’s Zhengdong New District now has turned into a model of successful urbanization in the mainland with more than 1.4 million people already moved in, and more are on the way.

The 150 sq km new area to the east of the city is divided into a central business district (CBD), a science and technology park,a university town, a commercial logistics zone, a science and technology park, and an economic and technological development area. All this is in a place where there was nothing but fallow construction land about 13 years ago.

So far, the new zone had attracted over 30,000 enterprises, including 49 of the world’s top 500 enterprises and 68 of China’s top 500 enterprises.

Designed to be the financial heartland of central China, it includes the provincial headquarters for HSBC, People's Bank of China, Bank of China and Agricultural Bank of China among 150 financial institutions.

Zhengdong New District is also home to the Longzihu College Park, which is a 11.21 sq km university town. Its 15 universities bring in more than 240,000 students and staff.

The 14th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) prime ministers' meeting was held successfully on December 14 last year at the Zhengzhou International Convention and Exhibition Centre in the district.

Founded in 2001, the SCO consists of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It has Afghanistan, Belarus, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan as observers.

This will be the first time the SCO prime ministers' meeting has been hosted by a second-tier Chinese city. Previously, it was held in countries' capitals or otherwise renowned cities.

During the break of the meeting, China's Premier Li Keqiang guided the foreign prime ministers to travel around the Zhengdong New District, which landmark architectures are the best showcase to tell the world the development of China’s ongoing urbanization.
