[Sponsored Article] Malvern College believes in the value of a holistic education and aims to produce well-rounded individuals who will be able to contribute to society in many ways. Its Co-Curricular activities programme is a big part of this, ranging from playing sports to flying planes. Malvern has always had a deep-rooted tradition of team sports such as football, cricket and rugby. Today this can be seen by the College’s links to the Worcestershire County Cricket Club. More recently Malvern has become a strong rugby school with a professional connection with Worcester Warriors rugby club; a recent rugby tour returned from New Zealand unbeaten. Girls’ sport has also become strong at Malvern with the U18 Girls Hockey team getting into the National indoor finals; there was also a recent joint Hockey and Netball tour to South Africa, which the girls enjoyed a great deal. Alongside the traditional team sports Malvern also plays Fives. Fives is a traditional English sport where a gloved or bare hand is used to hit a small hard ball against a wall with the intention of not letting your opponent hit it back. Malvern plays a version of Fives called Winchester Fives which means there is a large obstruction (3.4 metres high) known as a buttress placed on the left-hand side of the court. Due to this design feature Malvern can only play against certain schools – those being Winchester, Bradfield and Radley. Outdoor pursuits have also recently become popular: canoe polo, rock climbing and mountain biking to name a few. The programme has also facilitated a number of school trips abroad – this summer, pupils went on two separate trips to Borneo and Costa Rica, providing community service to local citizens who were in need on basic resources and facilities. Some of these trips can be demanding on pupils, but pupils tend to come back to Malvern exhilarated from what is always a more than worthwhile – sometimes life changing experience. The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) offers pupils more options to be active and keep fit. It is made up of 3 sections: The Army, The Royal Marines and The Royal Air Force (RAF). It gives pupils the chance to develop and master skills such as leadership, resilience, collaboration and problem solving whilst enjoying themselves. Those pupils who opt for the RAF can even learn to fly! Malvern College UK has a deserved reputation as a school that encourages excellence and participation in sport. With this tradition Malvern College Hong Kong sports will play an important part of in the co-curricular programme. All pupils will participate in a selection of sports including Rugby, Cricket, Netball, Basketball, Athletics, Gymnastics, and swimming.
