Hong Kong Academy (HKA) has long been recognised as a leading international IB World School. As they wrap up their 25th anniversary celebrations and look forward to the next academic year the school is proud to unveil an exciting addition to its Early Childhood programming: The Maker’s Atelier

Beginning August 2026, this optional Reggio-inspired afternoon programme for Pre-K learners is structured to intentionally expand upon the IB PYP curriculum through innovative practical modules which build spatial reasoning, deep ecological empathy and physical mastery.

What is The Maker’s Atelier?

The Maker’s Atelier is an innovative workshop environment tailored exclusively for students enrolled in HKA’s Pre-K classes. Rooted in the world-renowned Reggio Emilia approach, young children are empowered as competent, curious, and natural researchers.
By utilising HKA’s world-class, through-school facilities and drawing upon the deep expertise of specialised early childhood educators, The Maker’s Atelier provides an unparalleled space for hands-on, practical inquiry. Operating in a supportive dual-language environment, children explore both the physical and natural sciences through material-based scientific inquiry, practical application and heritage crafts.

Six Pillars of Inquiry: Learning Through Touch and Trial

Guided by expert teachers The Maker’s Atelier is structured around six distinct and highly tactile inquiry modules.
1. Primitive Pottery & Earth Glazes

This crafting module bridges the gap between creative expression and basic geology. As Pre-K students manipulate dense clay, they build essential hand strength and fine motor control. More importantly, they witness the fascinating concept of material transformation—observing how a soft, pliable lump of mud undergoing a molecular phase shift can become permanent, enduring stone.

2. Regeneration & Gardening

Stepping into HKA’s organic playscapes, children investigate the microscopic and subterranean soil life that keeps our planet healthy. Through precision tasks like seed planting and pruning, small muscles are refined. Over time, as they track and engage with seasonal growth cycles, children learn deep patience and the importance of our shared responsibility for our natural world.

3. Culinary Arts & Food Science

Far more than a simple cooking class, this is a working kitchen laboratory where thermal energy and chemistry come alive. Children practice manual dexterity by safely measuring, pouring, and chopping fresh ingredients. When weighing and mixing ingredients they apply mathematical principles of volume, weight and estimation. By watching bread rise or ingredients change state over heat, they observe biological leavening and phase transitions firsthand.
4. Outdoor Education & Nature-Based Inquiry

Learning at HKA isn't confined to four walls. Navigating uneven forest terrain and outdoor spaces builds crucial gross motor resilience and dynamic risk agility. As learners track natural patterns and listen to the sounds of the natural environment, they build a profound, lifelong independence and environmental empathy.

5. Fiber Arts, Textiles & Heritage Weaving

This tactile art medium challenges children to work with mathematical sequencing and physical tension grids. By manipulating natural dyes and raw wool, young creators learn to weave complex, beautiful structures. The repetitive, focused nature of weaving requires persistence, it also serves as a calming emotional anchor and a rigorous exercise in fine motor precision.

6. Woodwork & Tinkering

Merging practical physics with material literacy, children are introduced to real tools under careful supervision. Building with wood requires advanced dexterity and precision. As they rotate and configure wood supplies to fit a planned structural design they explore the concepts of force, angles, friction and balance, successfully transforming raw lumber into stable, self-made structures.

Flexibility Built Around Your Child

One of the greatest advantages of HKA’s early childhood pathway is its inherent flexibility. Recognising that every child develops at their own pace and that family dynamics vary, HKA encourages parents to tailor their child's school day.
Families can choose to enroll their children purely in the morning Pre-K classes, or they can supplement those mornings and extend their child’s learning into the afternoon with this bespoke, Reggio inspired programme. This unique arrangement provides a robust, enriched school day filled with inspired and active inquiry.
