In Partnership WithLingnan University – 50A

Lingnan University in Hong Kong is a public university, not a private one. However, unlike most public universities in Hong Kong, LU was established by a civic society. LU’s current campus in Tuen Mun was also given to it by the civic society through an exchange with the government whereby it transferred to the government the valuable campus in Stubbs Road which it had purchased with privately donated funds. Founded by a civic society and with its feet firmly on grounds provided by the civic society, Lingnan University is rightly entitled to enjoying its autonomy and charting its own course.

Since its establishment in 1967, Lingnan University of today has for quite a while focused its efforts on acquiring university status. However, this was merely an interim target and not its mission. After all, this has already been achieved for some time. As the saying goes, “At fifty you know your destiny”. I hope that, through concerted efforts of its faculty and staff, Lingnan University will make the right choices regarding its long-term development and its place in the international higher-education sector, and pave the way for a brighter future.
