Tutoring may not be for everybody, but there are few students who can’t benefit from it. There are class dynamics in school that can hinder some students from fully achieving their potential in a subject.

Some students are naturally reticent to speak up in class; they don’t want to feel embarrassed, and these can sometimes start to fall behind. A one on one, or small group session, allows students to “re-set”, change their mindset, and taste success. Other students are confident and talented but want to be even stronger. A tutor can push these students into unfamiliar territory and, perhaps, for the first time, make them realize that there is still a huge amount to learn, that getting a top grade is only the first step.

T. K. Ng (NTK Founder and Managing Director)

NTK’s English Department is comprised of a team of subject specialists and curriculum developers who are experienced in helping students prepare and succeed in exams. One of our US test prep specialists, who graduated from Harvard, emphasizes challenging students and improving their ability to discourse on a wide range of thought-provoking contemporary issues. This helps students develop the mindset and skills needed to thrive academically, especially when they continue their studies at top-tier universities such as those comprising the Ivy League and Oxbridge.

David Ollerearnshaw (NTK Director of Mathematics and Science)

Hi, I’m Mr. O and I’ve been teaching and tutoring mathematics at NTK for over twenty years. Mathematics is a very cumulative subject; topics don’t go away, and forgotten or half-learnt concepts have a nasty habit of popping up again when you least need them to. I’ve always preferred teaching individual students and small group classes as everyone I teach gets my full attention and I know all my students’ particular strengths and weaknesses in detail.

Here at NTK, one thing that we stress is the importance of preparation – “prior preparation prevents poor performance”, and our number one priority is to ensure that all teachers are fully prepared to do their teaching. No potential teacher is allowed to teach, regardless of qualifications or experience, unless they have undergone our lengthy in-house training. One aspect of preparation I stress to my maths and science teachers is the need to keep detailed and up to date records of every student. This means our teachers are confident, flexible, and of course, knowledgeable.

Dr. Ling (NTK Vice Principal, Chinese and Center Manager, Kowloon Campus)

I’ve been teaching Chinese at NTK for over 12 years. The majority of my students come from well-known local schools and international schools. Some of them are already doing quite well academically, and they just need an extra push to get a top score. For this group of students, our approach is to help them develop analytical and answering skills through systematic paper drilling practice. For IB students, reading sample high scoring essays and official examiner reports are also beneficial.

Some other students are weak in Chinese and lack confidence in the subject. Despite putting in the effort to learn Chinese, they still fall behind in class. At NTK, our Chinese teachers are experienced and well-trained in helping students overcome weaknesses and enhancing their capabilities. Using specific strategies, we guide students to understand what the exam requires and how to score marks in the exam.

Ultimately, our aim is to help students gain confidence and enjoy learning. NTK Learning Center is offering a range of courses and private groups catering to the IB, I/GCSE, GCE AL and US test prep.
