Academics scoop prizes at the Reimagine Education Awards

[Sponsored Article] PolyU academics received four awards at the Reimagine Education Awards 2016 in recognition of their innovative pedagogies. Co-organised by the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), compiler of the QS World University Rankings, these global awards are the “Oscars of Higher Education”, attracting more than 800 submissions from 56 countries. PolyU was the only University to receive as many as four distinguished awards this year.
1. Gold Award of Regional (Asia) Awards
“Platform for Remote Controlled Physics Experiments”
Dr Mak Chee-leung, Dr Peter Tsang and Dr Dennis Leung
This platform for remote-controlled physics experiments is the first-of-itskind in Asia, enabling students to conduct remote physics experiments anytime, anywhere by controlling equipment through a webcam. This can enhance students’ learning experience.
2. Overall Bronze Award in the Best Use of ICT Tools category
“Collaborative Learning with Technology – Peer Instructions with Clickers for Large Classes”
Dr Kevin Chan, Mr George Cheung and Mr Kelvin Wan
It is often a challenge for teachers to engage students and monitor their progress in large classes. The implementation of peer instruction with this instant student response system provides a solution to that problem. Using this system, students can submit answers with their laptops or smart phones while teachers can monitor students’ progress.
3. Overall Bronze Award in the Ethical Leadership category
“Service Leadership” credit-bearing subject

PolyU has been offering the “Service Leadership” credit-bearing subject for undergraduates since 2012. Apart from lectures, the subject features experiential and reflective learning, enabling students to gain a better understanding of the service leadership model and core beliefs.
4. Bronze Award in the Social Enterprise category
“Service Leadership through Serving Children and Families with Special Needs” service-learning subject
Prof. Daniel Shek Tan-lei
This service-learning subject offered by the Department of Applied Social Sciences is designed to enable students to understand the key attributes of service leaders and to apply the core skills of service leadership through engagement in community services.
