Kevin Coon, Vice President of the BMW Group Importer Office for the markets of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, is looking forward to this year’s BMW Hong Kong Derby on Sunday, March 19 at the world famous Sha Tin Racecourse.

“A BMW Hong Kong Derby champion must be well-prepared for the race of a lifetime, and the team behind the horse must stay 100 per cent focused. It is no different for a brand like BMW; that same preparation and focus enables us to stay at the forefront of the global automotive industry,” Coon said.

BMW has partnered with the Hong Kong Derby since 2013 and the regional head of the brand’s importer office has been delighted with the accord the automotive manufacturer enjoys with the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

“The Hong Kong Jockey Club is one of the world’s biggest contributors to the good of the wider community and it also works very hard to drive sustainability, a concept BMW cherishes,” he said.

First run in 1873, the Hong Kong Derby – modelled on the original Epsom Derby in England – actually predates the existence of the HKJC, and the first edition (1875) of the world-famous Kentucky Derby. As can be expected of a race with such a flamboyant history, the Hong Kong Derby has over the decades offered as much intrigue as excitement, creating scores of racing legends along the way.

The Hong Kong Derby is the race that every horse owner, every trainer and every jockey dearly wants to win. And the horse that makes it first past the post will earn its place in history alongside each winner dating back to Surprise 144 years ago. Each winner is an important chapter, or heritage, of local racing.

Over the years, thanks to the collaboration with the HKJC in important races, BMW has made the best of the race opportunity to entertain its customers, who were invited to witness the race contested by a new generation of top horses.
