Most tech events follow a familiar recipe: a sleek venue, several high-profile speakers, and plenty of formal networking. The first AWS Community Day in Hong Kong on 2 November 2025 built on this foundation, but what stood out was its community-first ethos. There were no top-down announcements or flashy product demos, instead it presented an opportunity for builders, innovators, and users that make up Hong Kong’s cloud ecosystem to come together.
Organised by the AWS User Group Hong Kong, and co-organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology, a close community of tech enthusiasts dedicated to growing the local developer network, the event was a refreshing reminder that the best ideas often come from the community itself. Joined by a passionate group of volunteers, the landmark occasion was a testament to AWS’s mission to inspire a new generation of builders, creating a continuous cycle of knowledge sharing that ensures the community's long-term sustainability.

Mark Arel, Head of Professional Services at AWS Hong Kong, kicked off the full day in his opening remarks, setting the tone by reminding attendees of the event’s unique community-led principle. “This is not an AWS event, what makes it special is the sharing between peers,” he emphasised. Echoing AWS's core value of being customer obsessed, the direct knowledge exchange during the event was said to be the key to fostering a stronger and more resilient community.
Also addressing the ongoing fear of artificial intelligence (AI), Mark noted that machines would only be able to take over human work if allowed. In simple terms, builders and developers would be able to offload unwanted routine tasks to AI. Therefore, it would be unwise to write off the potential held within the hands of technology, especially given the speed of change that is unprecedented to humanity.
Demystifying Real-world Tech Adoption
The first track brought together some of the deepest technical minds in the region, covering everything from web crawling and serverless performance to database migration and robotics. The sessions provided a comprehensive look at optimising the entire cloud lifecycle, exploring critical topics such as financial operations for balancing innovation and cost, serverless testing strategies that redefine application design, and AI-driven compliance with Terraform to embed security into infrastructure.

On the other hand, Track B embraced the human element of cloud adoption, spotlighting users’ personal experience, AWS tools and workflows that empower developers to level up. One of the speakers shared his six-month progression from having no cloud experience to becoming an AWS Community Builder, precisely demonstrating the transformative power of AWS and serverless technology.
Between building agent-to-agent solutions using AWS Bedrock AgentCore and utilising the latest Agentic AI IDE to wave goodbye to vibe coding, speakers demonstrated how an open mindset and a comprehensive technology stack can lead to corporate success. The sessions across the track consistently showed how smarter tooling can empower teams to simplify and overcome complexity. Freed from the burden of managing underlying infrastructure, developers can finally dedicate their energy to building what matters.
Learning by Doing
While Tracks A and B dove into the technical, the BuilderCards Playground brought the fun. It offered a gamified experience where participants competed in teams to design cloud-native solutions using real AWS services. Guided by the AWS Well-Architected Framework, the card game challenged players with trade-offs, encouraging learning by doing in a fast-paced yet collaborative environment.

The energy was palpable with over 350 developers, architects, and tech enthusiasts gathered in one venue, signalling the power of the AWS user community and a collective recognition of the need to master transformative technologies like AI. The inaugural AWS Community Day in Hong Kong proved that building for the future is a team sport, during which isolated experiments were translated into shared knowledge, propelling the industry forward.
From the complexities of Agentic AI to the promise of humanoid robots, the pace of change is no doubt dizzying. However, with a strong and supportive community, change that is inevitable becomes an extraordinary opportunity for collaboration. More importantly, attendees left with new connections, tested ideas, and a reinforced belief that most complex problems can be solved through joint effort and working together.
