Huawei tempts American consumers with a cheaper Mate 10 Pro

Can Huawei crack the US market?

Huawei plans to sell its flagship phone in the United States for far less than it costs in other major markets, according to the South China Morning Post, as the Chinese smartphone giant tries to find a way to break into the US.

Last month both AT&T and Verizon dropped plans to offer Huawei’s phones -- reportedly due to pressure from the US government. AT&T’s sudden withdrawal was described as a “big loss” to both parties by Huawei’s consumer boss Richard Yu.

Huawei will sell the Mate 10 Pro for US$799 -- far less than the US$856 it costs in China or the US$995 price in Europe. And as an added sweetener in the US, some retailers are offering US$150 gift cards with the phone.

But that price is for an unlocked, SIM-free version of the phone, which is not how people in the US commonly buy phones. 90% of all smartphone sales in the country are through carriers.
