As the only physics-based turbine engine prognostics company in the world, Life Prediction Technologies, Inc (LPTi) is in a distinct position to save clients millions of dollars in costly engine overhauls.
LPTi is revolutionising aerospace with engine-specific software that can help extend the life of turbine engines by as much as 100 per cent.
"Our software can tell how clients are using their engines and accurately advise them when to overhaul," says president and founder Dr Ashok Koul. "Overhauls can cost two-thirds of the engine cost. We give our clients several additional years before they have to open up the engine, providing them big savings."
The turbine engine lifecycle management specialist uses technology based on Koul's work as an inventor and chief scientist for more than 20 years at Canada's National Research Council.
"We understand the physics of the turbine engine's operation including what's inside the materials at the atomic level," Koul says. "We build our technologies at the micro level and take them to the macro level to provide the solutions."
The company stays at the forefront of innovation through collaboration with the University of Ottawa, Carleton University and Canada's Department of National Defence. About 70 per cent of company personnel have doctorates in engineering.
To expand its client base worldwide, LPTi conducts seminars for companies in the aerospace, power generation, oil and gas and marine sectors.
It has helped the China Aviation Power Institute with a design improvement of a new helicopter engine and will provide engine-specific software for the project's second phase.
LPTi has done work for NTPC and Gas Turbine Research Establishment in India.
"We look globally where knowledge is required," Koul says. "We're looking for direct partners in Brazil, India, China and other parts of Asia."
To support its globalisation, LPTi is planning to establish offices on the mainland, India and the United States.
