Vantage spot needed for moon eclipse

STARGAZERS may be able to see a partial eclipse of the moon on Saturday evening - but they will need keen eyes and a good site to watch from.

A lump will seem to be bitten out of the top edge of the moon as the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow over the moon.

It will last for a little over an hour shortly after the moon rises.

But because the moon will be low in the sky when it enters the shadow at about 7.40 pm, viewers will need to be somewhere with an unobstructed view of the east-southeast, according to Space Museum curator Yip Chee-kuen.

Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront or somewhere to the south of the island such as Stanley would be best, said Mr Yip.

'The Earth's shadow will not be very sharp, because the moon is just near the edge of the umbra [shadow],' so how much anyone could see would depend greatly on the weather, he said.

The eclipse would last until about 8.55 pm and the moon would rise to 30 degrees above the horizon. The 'bite' would take about 11 per cent of the moon.
