CONNOISSEURS of the good life have one more good thing to look forward to from today. Alfred Dunhill, the purveyor of high quality, quintessentially English style, and International Distillers China Limited have just launched two new Cognacs in the region at a glitzy dinner in the Grand Hyatt Ballroom.

  Richard Cole, managing director of Alfred Dunhill (Pacific) said the marketing of Dunhill Cognac VSOP at $338 a bottle and XO at $1,380 a decanter was in keeping with his 102-year-old company's mission to produce the ultimate range in luxury goods for men.

  'We are always looking at what products would be right for Alfred Dunhill,' he said.

   'In 1981 we launched a rich and opulent whisky which became very successful. We hope the same will happen with Dunhill Cognac.'   Mr Cole added that Cognac was very much part of the upper-class English lifestyle of the 19th century, the values of which his company tries to reflect. The digestifs are made from blends of the finest aged Cognacs, exclusively from the premiere 'CRUS' of Cognac: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois.

  The brands were created by Master Blender Francois Audemard. He described the brown topaz-coloured XO as 'the culmination of an extremely subtle blending of no fewer than 150 eaux de vie from highly selective and prestigious suppliers with the essential emphasis placed on the oldest and finest selections'.

  Our own taster described the XO as: 'A splendour of taste and bouquet to which words do scant justice. For elegance, gentle mellowness and velvet strength, it would be hard to surpass.

  'If, as has been suggested, the master blender's role is akin to a composer with a full orchestra, then this Cognac is a complete symphony, a masterpiece of harmony and nobility.'   As for the VSOP, he described the amber nectar as possessing 'warmth with gentleness, vigour with subtlety, roundness, full body and great finesse'.

     WE'RE looking forward to seeing how much time Princess Diana will spend in the shops when she visits the territory this weekend.

  Apparently, she spent a good deal of the Easter weekend shopping in Washington with her close friend Lucia Flecha de Lima, wife of the Brazilian ambassador, Paulo Tarso Flecha de Lima, a fact that caused him some anguish.

  The ambassador was busy organising a state visit to Washington starting today by the Brazilian president and would have welcomed a little help from his wife. Instead Princess Diana and Lucia were off to the shops all the time leaving the business of the presidential visit to an increasingly frustrated envoy.

  One source told us: 'He's been receiving fax after fax from Brasilia about the fine details of the president's tour and is, I understand, rather angry with his wife for having invited Princess Diana at this time.' The ambassador was said to be further enraged that his embassy was besieged by photographers chasing the princess over the weekend, while his attempts to interest them in the visit of the president have met with less than success.

     THE Economist magazine has just come out with its annual Big Mac index, which it uses to measure the dollar's value against other currencies.

   The magazine has been researching the cost of a Big Mac in 32 countries since 1986 as a light-hearted guide to whether currencies are at a 'correct' level.

  This year it has found that the US dollar is significantly undervalued. That's enough of the boring economics. What really interested us was that the cheapest Big Macs can be obtained in China for US$1.05 - or nine yuan.

  Hong Kong comes next at $9.50 or US$1.23. The average price in four American cities is US$2.32. The most expensive place to buy them is Switzerland, where they cost US$5.20.

  Apparently, all this means that the yuan is the most undervalued currency while the Swiss franc is the most overvalued.

     MADONNA and Jacky Cheung will be appearing all over the place shortly to mark the relaunch tomorrow of MTV. The two stars have been signed up to promote the 24-hour Mandarin-language network. The station's research revealed the two stars were the most popular among 12-to 34-year-olds.

   The print advertisement featuring Madonna was shot on location at the recent Bedtime Stories premiere event in New York. She is seen lying on a bed holding an MTV logo which reads: 'I want it all the time . . . my MTV'.

  Cheung will be featured in radio commercials. No agreement has yet been reached by MTV over distribution in Hong Kong, although it will be available in Taiwan.

   The broadcasters are still in discussions with ATV, TVB and Wharf Cable in an attempt to sell either sections of the 24-hour programming or, in the case of Wharf, a dedicated channel.
