Wine

Wine: Chateau Filhot Grape: Semillon 60 per cent, Sauvignon Blanc 35 per cent, Muscadelle per cent Region: Sauternes, Bordeaux, France Vintage: 1990 MANY wine lovers do not drink sweet wines despite the fact that some of the world's greatest wines are sweet, including the legendary Chateau d'Yquem. If the sweetness is natural and comes from grapes affected by botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, then the wines can be quite magnificent. Botrytis causes the grapes to shrivel on the vine and concentrates the juice. The wines have great depths of flavour and will keep for many years.

Chateau Filhot, one of the most beautiful chateaux in Bordeaux, has recently released its best wine for many years, the 1990. There is an abundance of rich, luscious fruit together with underlying acidity which helps balance the wine. The Filhot is powerful and alcoholic - 14 per cent.
