Global Energy expansion benefits maritime industry

When Singapore liberalised its petroleum industry in 1985, master mariner Loh Hong Leong saw the opportunity in the trading of bunker fuels in one of the world's busiest ports. He co-founded Global Energy International, a company that stood out in the industry. Then, some companies traded in bunker fuels but did not have their own tankers to deliver the products themselves and vice versa.
By investing in its own fleet and integrating all three components of oil trading, shipping logistics and ship management, Global Energy has set a new standard of reliability and efficiency in the bunker fuels supply chain, in oil transport and marine services.
"With our own fleet, we can always keep pace with our clients," says Loh, group managing director of Global Energy. "We ensure shipowners quick turnaround in the refuelling of their ships because they would lose time, meaning money, if they overstay in the harbour."
With 23 modern tankers, Global Energy services container ships, tanker fleets and bulk carriers. With established operations in Singapore, Malaysia and Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, the company also plans to offer its services in other countries such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka and China.
"We would like to follow our clients beyond our current markets," Loh says. "By doing so, we can provide them with the same quality of service and business confidence as they call into other ports."
Broadening its participation across the value chain, Global Energy will venture upstream into wholesale oil cargo trading while deepening its distribution activities downstream. The company seeks partnerships and strategic alliances in other major ports to increase its current footprint as a service provider.
"We are looking out for new businesses and welcome joint ventures with people keen on looking at what we are doing," Loh says. "Together, we can explore opportunities. We are open to collaboration and welcome new ways of doing things."
