Elections a 'must'

GOVERNOR Mr Chris Patten did not oppose the Basic Law formula of the Election Committee as long as all members were elected rather than appointed, the conservative Co-operative Resources Centre said yesterday.

''We have spent some time with Mr Patten on this point. We have checked against ourselves and noted that Mr Patten stressed only that all members of the committee should be elected,'' centre member Mrs Selina Chow Liang Shuk-yee said yesterday.

Ten of the 17 centre members met Mr Patten on Wednesday to express their views about the recent political impasse between Britain and China.
