Boutique park harnesses Asia's bioeconomy potential

Rizatuddin Ramli, CEO

Biotechnology companies wanting direct access to the booming Asian markets can find an ideal base in Nusajaya, Malaysia. Within easy reach of Singapore and a few hours away from economic powerhouses China and India, the fast-developing city is also home to a boutique, premier biotechnology park dedicated to the bio-based industry.

Originating from a public-private partnership between the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp) and one of the country's largest property developers UEM Sunrise, Malaysian Bio-XCell is positioned to hasten the commercialisation and large-scale production of industrial and health care biotechnology companies.

"We want to be a pioneer in catalysing an integrated ecosystem and foster a holistic approach for the acceleration of prodigious businesses from good sciences. Ultimately, our aim is to cultivate the potential of bioeconomy by creating a sustainable ecosystem and enhancing a value-chain that is conducive for biotechnology and bio-based industries in the Asean region," says Rizatuddin Ramli, CEO. "Much of what we do is synergistic with our parent Malaysian BiotechCorp, and the regional economic corridor authorities, where we stay focused on our objectives to realise investments, promote efficiencies and enable societal benefits."

In organising ecological benefits, Bio-XCell strengthens efficiency and offers significant cost savings by providing bulk utilities such as steam, chilled water and wastewater management as shared services for clients at its park.

The park is strategically located on a 65-hectare development surrounded by seaports and international airports. It is flanked by world-class educational institutions such as Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, University of Southampton and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

"Our focus is to provide clients with a range of value-added services, including comprehensive park infrastructure, customised facilities and core utilities to nurture the ecosystem," Ramli says.

Bio-XCell offers a range of products and services such as land parcels, ready-built manufacturing units, lab spaces, furnished and unfurnished offices, food and beverage and retail outlets. Bio-XCell also offers business facilities such as virtual offices, meeting rooms, and an auditorium for the park's tenants, clients and the wider community in the Iskandar region.

The managed park is home to global clients such as Biocon, an Indian biologics facility that will represent the largest insulin production plant in Asia, Stelis Biopharma from India, METabolic EXplorer from France and Glycos Biotechnologies from the United States.

Bio-XCell is committed to spearheading the biotechnology space with an integrated sustainable biotechnology ecosystem in the emerging metropolis, Iskandar Malaysia region.
