Man cleared in arms case

A MAN accused of throwing a bag containing three loaded pistols and 52 bullets overboard from a ferry was cleared in the High Court yesterday.

Pang Wan-chiu, 32, defended by Mr Peter Wan, was discharged by Mr Justice Duffy after a jury found him not guilty of possessing arms and ammunition without a licence.

Crown counsel Mr William Lam had called evidence that police boarded a Ping Chau ferry at 5 pm on Christmas Eve, 1991, for an identity card check.

It was the Crown's case that when they approached Pang and asked to see a bag he was allegedly carrying, he threw it overboard.

A bag containing three guns, each loaded with eight rounds of ammunition, and 52 extra bullets, was later found by a diver.

Pang did not give evidence in his defence, but sought to establish in cross-examination of Crown witnesses that the evidence given by police officers was unreliable.
