Port-centric logistics company bolsters trade in Asean

David Rahadian, business development director

As the largest economy in Asean, Indonesia plays a crucial role in developing the logistics sector to maintain Asean's competitiveness in the global market. Supporting the country's move to ease and professionalise the flow of goods, particularly bulk shipments to and from Indonesia, Krakatau Bandar Samudera (KBS) manages the Port of Cigading and provides specialised port-centric services to Asia's buoyant logistics market.

Having the deepest port in Indonesia that is connected to toll and rail routes, the Port of Cigading handles bulk cargo such as steel materials, food and feeds.

KBS provides shipping companies and investors with efficient handling of industrial cargo and offers support facilities including warehousing and jetty management.

From a capacity of 3 million tonnes in 1996, Indonesia's largest bulk port logistics player now handles up to 10 million tonnes of cargo annually. It plans to grow its capacity to 45 million tonnes by 2020. It has doubled its jetty length to become the only jetty that can serve and discharge vessels of up to 200,000 metric tonnes - the biggest in Indonesia.

Tailoring its solutions to customers' needs, KBS is building an integrated warehouse to be completed next year.

With the integrated warehouse, customers particularly from the food and feed manufacturing industries can discharge a 70,000-tonne grains carrier in just four days compared to 10 to 12 days with limited infrastructure.

"Without integrated ability, customers suffer from unproductive time and higher port charges," says David Rahadian, business development director. "We will continue to develop our relationships with customers so we know what they want, what they need and what they expect from us."

KBS seeks to collaborate with potential investors from the United States, South Korea and Japan to develop new projects. With its network and access to infrastructure opportunities, KBS is the ideal partner as it combines its port operations business with comprehensive and efficient logistics services.
