Punks and triads upset authorities

AS the Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, lamented the spread of punk culture and other 'negative Western trends' among Malaysian youth last week, police were taking action to curb a negative Asian trend, the spread of secret societies.

Following an attack on a Form Three student who refused to pay M$300 (HK$930) for the privilege of being a member of a secret society, police said officers would be stationed at a number of schools in Petaling Jaya, an industrial and residential suburb of Kuala Lumpur.
