Plan looks at energy managers

THE Government is considering appointing managers in all its offices to carry out energy audits and promote good energy housekeeping practices.

The Secretary for Planning, Environment and Lands, Mr Tony Eason, said the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department had also set up an energy efficiency sub-division to provide technical support to other departments and co-ordinate in-house efforts.

He said the Government used about 10,000 tonnes of paper each year, about seven per cent of which contained recycled paper.

However, the fact that recycled paper of an acceptable standard was about 20 to 25 per cent more expensive than the paper in general use was an obstacle to the wider use of recycled paper.

More than 60 government branches and departments had introduced schemes for the collection of paper waste, Mr Eason said.
