CSL set to offer new rate plan

With less than a week to go until the launch of the first of six new mobile phone networks, market leader Hongkong Telecom CSL is devising ways to attract and keep customers.

Its recently created One2Free subsidiary is introducing a tariff plan under which unused free airtime is rolled forward on a month-by-month basis up to a maximum of six months.

Most other rate plans do not allow unused free airtime to be carried over in this manner.

Hongkong Telecom CSL managing director Alan Ma has said he saw One2Free as the firm's 'engine of growth' in the mobile sector.

As competition intensifies over the next few months, more networks are likely to look to tariff plan innovations to attract customers.

People's Phone, first of the personal communications service mobile operators, launches services on Wednesday, although it is unlikely to push hard for market share in the early stages as its network is still limited.

It is the only network in Hong Kong that will offer a cellular service without the need for a monthly plan. Subscribers will simply be charged for the calls they make at $1 a minute.
