HK athletes have wind in their sails

Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) athlete Daniel Ho Chi- ho produced outstanding performances at the Penang Open Windsurfing Championships.

The 16-year-old sailor finished second overall at the Malaysian regatta and first in the youth category.

Another scholarship athlete Cheng Hing-lun was third overall and second in the youth division. Chan Hoi-shen, also from the territory, was fourth overall.

The Hong Kong group was headed by HKSI windsurfing coach Stephen Lam. The event was part of an overseas training camp funded by the institute, aimed at providing youngsters with more training opportunities and overseas competition. The squad sent to Penang comprised eight sailors.

Another HKSI windsurfing coach Rene Appel said: 'It's encouraging that our young sailors have started getting good results.

'The training camp will help us prepare for the ISAF Youth World Championships in Japan in July and the Asian Pacific Rim Championships in China in August.' Meanwhile, HKSI athlete Con O'Kelly received a welcome Easter gift when he won the Maxim Triathlon Series in Sydney.

Held on the Easter holiday weekend, the sprint race attracted a strong field of 250 triathletes and comprised a 400-metre swim, six-kilometre cycle and five-kilometre run.

O'Kelly was fourth off the bike but the Hong Kong triathlete made his best-ever run to move into first place after just 2 km.

He completed the course in 42 minutes and 51 seconds, one minute ahead of his nearest rival.

The talented, competitive O'Kelly also finished second in the Warrington triathlon series the week before.

Both races are part of his build-up for the forthcoming ITU World Cup in Auckland later this month and the Hong Kong International triathlon in May.
