Irishman rounding off stay in style

IRISH rider Pat Shanahan is winding up his winter Taipa stint with a flourish, adding a double yesterday as he ponders an offer to ride in the Indian Derby in Bombay. Shanahan and visiting international licensee, Frenchman Claude Piccioni, were the stars of the show yesterday, taking four races between them.

Shanahan is certain to return next season. The offer to ride in Bombay came late last week but there is now doubt about the Derby going on in the troubled Indian city this Sunday. But there was no doubt about the manner in which Shanahan punched out his winners yesterday, bringing home 9-2 chance Wind Chaser in the first event to score by a head from dead-heaters Diamond Ball (9-5 favourite) and Jean-Pierre (80-1) in the Class Six short sprint. Shanahan completed the double when Sea Coral Treasure (14-1) scored a surprisingly easy win in the Class Four, 1,500-metre ninth event, ironically beating Piccioni into second place on Fook Sing (40-1). Shanahan leaves for Ireland at the end of the week.

Piccioni struck with Break Away (5-1) for trainer Wing Leung in the Class Three fifth event over 1,700 metres and followed up with 3-1 favourite Cheetah for Terry Tse in the seventh.

The other winter visitor, Kiwi Grant Davison, kept his good run going when odds-on favourite My King's Island (8-5) duly obliged in the Class Four sixth event.
