Contrary to the comments by Brian Vickers (letter, South China Morning Post, June 10), my letter of May 21 made no mention of Tiananmen or its aftermath.

 Ruth Lee (Post, May 27) had written in support of my basic views on the importance of knowing who is really behind protest groups, but she then chose independently to link those views to Tiananmen issues. Mr Vickers has merged comments from both letters and amazingly begins to quote me on Tiananmen.

 To correct the misinformation, my letter did not advocate banning protests, I simply say we have a right to know who is behind them to ensure we are not being manipulated.

 My original letter refuted the suggestion that Vietnam war protesters had saved lives by shortening the war, pointing out that their efforts had exactly the opposite effect and that whatever the intentions of the protesters, they were being manipulated by others, to the detriment of their own servicemen.

 The men actually involved in combat in Vietnam at the time, myself included, considered the activities of the protesters to be traitorous and we were disappointed that governments back home did not at least reveal to the public the extent to which the protesters were being exploited and funded by North Vietnam and its allies. My letter then related this to the handover period in Hong Kong and how this was also a situation ripe for manipulation by organisations with their own agenda. I stated that China as our government then, has not only a right, but a duty to find out who and what may be behind any protests following the handover. If the citizens of Hong Kong are being urged to take to the streets in protest over any issue, surely it is prudent to know who is doing the urging.

 With the world watching closely, it is naive to think this potentially volatile period will not be exploited by self-interested groups.

 We are all hoping for the most open society possible in the circumstances.

 Is it unreasonable that protest groups be asked to lay all the cards on the table as well? I cannot imagine a fairer system.

 JIM MARETT Happy Valley I understand that just after midnight on June 30, when Prince Charles, Chris Patten and company set sail on the Britannia from Hong Kong they will head for the Philippines. The reason being that it is nearby and neutral in that it was never a British colony. Any other nearby destination would send the wrong signals to someone.

 Well correction, although the Philippines was never a British colony in the true sense of the term, it was occupied by Britain.

 It was a long time ago yes, but the Philippines was given to Britain by Spain as a result of a war. British troops were based in Manila, but interest in keeping the territory was not shared by the British government and it was then given back to Spain sometime later.

 Therefore, even the Philippines may not be the most desirable destination.

 I wonder if readers have any other suggestions.

 PETE ALEX Kowloon I refer to the letter from Ivy Lai Chun-chun (Post, June 21), in which she said, 'We trust Tung Chee-hwa . . . and count on him to stand up for the territory . . . . '.

 I was born and brought up in Hong Kong. I don't trust Tung Chee-hwa and I don't count on him. After all, we did not elect him to be the so-called Chief Executive-designate.

 He was put in that position. If there is a general election in Hong Kong, he will not be able to get my vote.

 Ivy Lai Chun-chun, please use the word 'We' with care. I don't want to be included in your 'We'. Use 'I' instead.
