Line up for charity fun race

It is almost that time of year again. We are now calling for teams to come forward to register for the 23rd Annual Matilda Bazaar and Sedan Chair Race in aid of local charities.

This race has now become an institution on the Hong Kong fund-raising calendar.

Last year's event raised over $2 million, all of which was distributed among local charities. This year we hope to do even better.

The 1997 race will be held slightly earlier this year, on Saturday, September 27.

The date has been brought forward so as to fall within the Hong Kong Tourist Association's (HKTA) '100 Days of Wonders' campaign.

With the HKTA's promotional backing, we expect a record turnout of spectators on the day.

The race starts and finishes at the Matilda Hospital, and does not have to be taken too seriously. Whilst there is always keen competition among the serious athletes, many teams merely 'walk' the course.

They dress up in outlandish costumes intent on entertaining the many spectators. Trophies are awarded in several different categories, catering to all levels of interest and athletic prowess.

Following the race and the prize-giving ceremony, a lively bazaar gets underway, with stalls selling a wide variety of merchandise and food and beverage. The Children's Bazaar, with a 'Sea World' theme, will offer a wide range of activities to keep children amused.

Anyone interested in entering a team in the race, in selling their wares at the bazaar, or in volunteering to assist the organisers, should contact the event's co-ordinator, Narelle Pamuk, on 2849-6852.
