A cleaner admitted using chloroform in a failed attempt to rape a colleague.

 The 20-year-old pleaded guilty in the District Court yesterday to using chloroform in order to commit an indictable offence.

 His 39-year-old victim suffered grazing on her elbows and right shoulder in the struggle.

 Prosecutor Philip Ross told the court the defendant had known his victim for a year. They 'had nice long chats and he had a secret love for her', Mr Ross said.

 The woman was working in a Tsz Wan Shan building on the morning of May 25 when she was attacked from behind by someone who placed a towel over her mouth and nose, Mr Ross said.

 In her struggle, she smelled 'what she believed to be thinner on the towel' he said, and as she shook her head she managed to identify the attacker as her colleague.

 She felt dizzy and cried for help. The assailant escaped when confronted by resident Law Hing-man.

 When arrested by police on June 4, the cleaner admitted intending to rape his colleague, Mr Ross told Judge Wong Hing-chun.

 The attacker told police he had bought the bottle of chloroform in Kowloon City.

  Sentencing was adjourned to November 10, pending reports.
