Awards give zest to student life

AN award scheme at CCC Kei Yuen College has provided a greater incentive for students to work harder at their studies and get more involved in activities outside the classroom.

The principal Ms Wong Wing-shu said the scheme, introduced in 1991, is meant to give students an all-round development.

The scheme is in three stages - gold, silver and bronze. Students are required to complete specific jobs within a given time for which they gain points and get promoted to the next stage.

Activities are varied. They include working for the student union and taking part in the sports day.

The areas covered range from arts, sports and group activity to ethical training and religious work.

While all Form 1 students must join the scheme, students of other forms may join on a voluntary basis.

Ms Wong said prizes are given to students with outstanding performances. Merits obtained in the scheme are mentioned in the student's testimonial upon graduation.

''The scheme is a great en couragement. Students have a clear goal, and it helps them live a fuller life and not waste their time,'' the principal said.

The school also takes a special interest in English language training. Two expatriate teachers offer the students plenty of exposure to the language.

Remedial classes are available to Form 1 students, and seniors are called upon to help the juniors with their class-work and make them feel ''at home'' in the school, Ms Wong said.

''We try to make learning and school life as lively and interesting as possible. We hold regular fun-fairs, and the English Club presents an assembly once a month at which all the students have to speak English.'' The teacher-student relationship is of special importance.

''Teachers seek to build a close, friendly relationship with the students. It's only this way we can really get to understand the students, and what they need,'' Ms Wong said.

''Most of the teachers spend some hours after school to talk to the students.'' Founded in 1982, the school celebrated its 10th anniversary not long ago. A thanksgiving service and an open day were held to mark the occasion.

Last year, science student Cheung Sing-yan brought the school credit when she gained five distinctions at the HKCEE.

Nearly 80 per cent of the last batch of Form 7 graduates have entered local tertiary institutes.
