Learner lunacy

WHY is it that learner drivers are frequently to be seen proceeding up Shan Kwong Road past the ''Learners Prohibited'' sign in order to practise hill starts and three-point turns by the Buddhist school? One recent morning I noted a learner driver, not displaying plates but completely incompetent, proceed up the hill and wait for about three minutes until the road was clear.

During this wait the passenger was gesturing in all directions.

Then the car carried out an appalling three-point turn with hill start. The car was small, Japanese and bright red.

With the opening of the new Jockey Club building at the top of Shan Kwong Road, the traffic on this stretch is no longer light and these manoeuvres have become exceedingly dangerous.

Qualified drivers in Hongkong are bad enough but this situation must be dealt with.

Perhaps it would offer a focus of attention for the police motorcyclists who seem to delight in whizzing up Village Road with their loudspeakers on full blast. DOROTHY CHOLOMONDLEY-WATSON Happy Valley
