'Too sexy' promo halts show

TVB has cancelled the screening tonight of the Super Summer Show on the Jade channel after complaints that promotions for the programme were 'too sexy'.

But ATV is still going ahead with showing the Miss Asia Pageant Special this evening despite similar complaints being lodged against the showing of sexy swimsuits.

TVB's assistant manager for external affairs, Susanna Lee Shui-ling, said the station had decided to postpone the show.

'TVB received more than 300 complaints that promotions for our show and ATV's show were too sexy,' she said.

The channel would not show its programme tonight because TVB did not want the audience to confuse its image with that of ATV.

'Our programme is not meant to sell a sexy image. In fact, we've held this kind of swimming game for the past five years,' Ms Lee said.

Acting chief executive officer of ATV Kenneth Kwok Wai-kin said the Miss Asia Pageant was 'healthy' and viewers should only comment after watching it.

Overly sexual promotions for TV programmes were condemned yesterday by Democratic Party members, who said they had been flooded with complaints.

The promotions for the two programmes should have been controlled and were unsuitable for young viewers, the complaints stated.

'We are calling for stronger supervision by the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority [TELA] toward these kinds of programmes,' Democrat Lee Kwok-keung said.

Mr Lee and about a dozen other party members held a protest about the programmes outside ATV's Broadcast Drive studios, TVB's headquarters in Clear Water Bay and the TELA offices.
