Super Power can take class rise in stride

AFTER accounting for Class Five opposition in comprehensive fashion at his last start, Super Power takes on a Class Four field and looks up to the task again.

Jockey Tony Cruz had Super Power near the rear of the field at his last run over a mile at Sha Tin, but when he asked for some acceleration from the Wong Tang-ping-trained horse, he cruised through the field to win going away.

Plagued by some problems earlier in his career, Super Power has only started to come right this season. He put in a very good second to Planet, again over the Sha Tin mile, and Planet subsequently went on to run a strong second to Our Pal in a competitive Class Four event.

So taking a line through that run, Super Power seems well up to the rise in class.

He looks to have no problem in the fitness department, judging by a very good workout on Monday morning, when he performed better than stablemate Win Tack, who looks a bit of a chance in the preceding race for Class Three mounts.

There may be some reservations in that Super Power is tackling the Valley turf for the first time in his career, but the 1,650 metres looks perfect for him and, as a further boost to his chances, it is worth remembering that not many ride Happy Valley better than Cruz.

Tung Feng has already won over course and distance in this class and defeated Class Five opposition over 1,400 metres last start. Although it was a pretty weak field he beat last outing, must be respected on the strength of his Class Four win last season.

Successful Way is a winner of his last two starts, albeit in Class Five, but it is significant that Cruz, who rode Successful Way last start and in trackwork on Monday morning, has stuck with Super Power.

Cash Bonus is probably better over 1,800 metres but nevertheless is still a quinella hope judging by a very good run earlier in the season over course and distance when going down by only a short head to Winning Colours.

Lone Star and Best Runner are not completely out of it as well in a very competitive last event, but that should provide Super Power with some kind of value on the tote - provided of course Cruz has not already racked up a couple of winners earlier in the evening.
