Chiu the lone HK success

A battling performance from Asian Games hopeful Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin could not prevent Hong Kong's women from an opening round defeat against Belgium at the Women's World Team Championships in Stuttgart.

Chiu, who is playing her last serious tournament before heading to Thailand, defeated Kim Hannes 9-3, 9-2, 7-9, 9-4.

Christina Mak Wai-ying was beaten in straight games 3-9, 7-9, 1-9 by Katline Cauwells while Iris Chung Suet-mei crashed 1-9, 0-9, 3-9 to Annabel Romedenne.

Hong Kong, who are seeded 14th in the tournament, will now play their strongest Pool D opponents Egypt - who are seeded eight - today.

Favourites Australia launched the defence of their title in the 21-team event with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Germany.
